Metalworking fluids are used to decrease heat and friction and to take off metal particles in industrial machining and grinding operations. Metal cutting fluid belongs to a class of coolant and lubricant designs particularly for metalworking processes, like machining and stamping. There is different type of Metal Working Fluid like:

  • Straight oils (Neat or cutting oils) – This type of Metal Working fluid is versatile and made of petroleum, vegetable, animal, or marine oils. This type of Straight oils is not diluted and are used for heavy-duty machining processes. Regularly addition of Extreme pressure agents is made in straight oils to increase its performance.
  • Soluble oils (Emulsifiable oil) – This type of Metal Working fluid is made to cool and lubricate, especially for cutting and grinding.  This type of oil prevents welding between the cutting tools and workpiece and helps to prevent the wearing of the tool. It contains pure petroleum oils around 40-70% and emulsifiers which help in spreading of oil make it milky in appearance.
  • Semi-synthetic fluids – This type of fluid contain 5 -30% pure petroleum and diluted with 30-50% water. Semi-synthetic fluids may have many additives like chlorine, sulfur, and fatty acids. These Metal Working fluids are used to cool and lubricate and in all forms of metal cutting.
  • Synthetic fluids – This type of fluid contains no petroleum oil. They are diluted with simple synthetics, organic and inorganic salts to form a clear solution. It is regularly used to dampen the workpiece which helps in prevention of mist and smoke especially during the grinding process.

Features of Metal Working Fluid :

  • High Thermal conductivity
  • High performance coolant
  • High Heat capacity
  • high viscosity.
  • Non-reactive to Chemical
  • Hardwater resistance

Advantages of Metal Working Fluid :

  • Rust and corrosion inhibitors present in cutting fluids prevent the corrosion of machine parts and the machined surface.
  •  Improvement of Tool-life by reducing  friction & abrasion which prevents corrosion and rust.
  • It helps in removal of chips during certain machine process like milling & drilling.
  • It enhances Surface finish by preventing thermal expansion& property changes in a workpiece.
